Adoption of the SGA model in Mexico
On October 9, 2015, the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare published the Official Mexican Regulation NOM-018-STPS-2015 “Harmonized system for the identification and communication of hazards and risks by hazardous substances in the workplace”. This regulation implements the fifth revised edition of the SGA in Mexico for the workplace.
The regulation establishes a transitory period for the implementation of 3 years after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF). During the period of transition, employers have the option to comply with the previous regulation NOM-018-STPS-2000 (System for the Identification and Communication of Dangers and Risks by Hazardous Chemical Substances in the workplace), or with the new (NOM-018-STPS-2015).
With the entry into force of the new regulation in October 2018, the regulation NOM-018-STPS-2000 (published in October 27, 2000) and its modification (of January 2, 2001 and September 6, 2013) will be repealed).
